Class Objective – The student will learn to:

  1. Understand the purpose and operation of commercial door closers.
  2. Identify the different types of door closers and their appropriate applications.
  3. Learn proper installation techniques for overhead concealed, surface-mounted, parallel arm, top jamb, and overhead glass door closers.
  4. Understand how proper closer selection improves safety, accessibility, and door performance.
  5. Become familiar with fire, life safety, and building codes governing door closer installations.
  6. Learn how to adjust door closers for proper opening, closing, latching, and backcheck operation.
  7. Recognize common installation and adjustment issues and how to correct them.
  8. Select the appropriate door closer based on door type, traffic volume, and building requirements.

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the uses, installation, and applications of commercial door closers. Students will learn the differences between overhead glass door closers, standard arm closers, parallel arm closers, and top jamb mounted closers while gaining an understanding of where each style is best suited.

Special emphasis will be placed on proper installation techniques, adjustment procedures, and compliance with current fire, building, and life safety codes. Participants will also learn how properly installed and adjusted door closers improve security, extend hardware life, and ensure safe, reliable door operation.
